Unit 1: final evaluation.
During unit one I have been able to research many artists who have very different styles to one another, such as, Anna Atkins, Man Rai, Bruce Davidson, Damilola Oshilaja. I really liked Damilola Oshilaja's work as he didn't just photograph objects and things but people. He included the natural things about people like their bodies but also their jobs and roles, He produced some photographs of people who put there life on the line like firefighters and sea rescue. We also see in his pictures how he liked the use of colours, not just a few colours, he used a wide variety of colours in most of his pictures. Not many of his pictures are fully colourless. Oshilaja would make the images look so amazing and interesting an sometimes so surreal. I think that may be the reason Im so interested in taking pictures of people in their everyday life, just being normal, doing things they would usually do when nobody is watching them.
Throughout unit 1 we have looked at a variety of materials, techniques and processes, such as, photograms, cyanotypes, pinhole photography, light painting etc... The light painting was fun, its was something new that I
never even knew was possible, like many of the other topics. I liked how we could be in it and other people could all get involved with the lights, we could make whatever pattern we wanted and it was fun trying to get it how we wanted the photo to be. I investigated 2 different personal projects; mobile photography and street photography. For mobile photography I used the ipod and its apps to take some photos of things that could be put in a frame together because they were the same, but different. For street photography I went out and took photos of people who were just doing their day to day business. I was inspired by Bruce Davidson for these images as i saw his work and liked how everything he took a photo of was just normal, what you see is what there is.
I think my favourite type of photography was when I done Disguise. I liked it because I could be creative and make it my own, i used objects so people could hide their face and i also used some masks, the masks were my favourite because I like the way it looked in the photos, there was still a face just not an everyday normal face that you would see in the street. I found it more fun and exciting taking though's images. I also made masks of real people and got people to hold it in front of their face. For some of our projects we were able to go into the gallery and see other student previous work, this gave me a lot of new ideas and was very helpful, not just to me but the rest of the class, seeing some of the work made me want to be able to produce something like that.
For some of my pieces I had done a range of things, I did one of peoples different shoes on a plain white background, some had a sort of slumber effect on them and others were just normal. I liked that because they were all the same things but still different designs and colours and even sizes. Another piece i created was trees. I took several photographs of some trees outside, once I chose the best one I edited it so it was mirrored from the root, then when it was printed i stuck it to some white card. Then i got some orange paint and spilled it down one side then folded the piture and pressed it down. When i opened it the paint had spread into a lovely patters down the middle of the whole picture. i repeated this three times, the next time i used purple paint and on the third i tried using blue ink, I thought the blue ink worked well as you could see something almost like creases throughout the ink.
For my final piece, i tried a few different ideas before i found the one to use, at first i tried cutting and tearing shapes in the middle of pieces of paper and have people look through it of put their ear or tongue through it. it didn't really work as well as id hoped so then moved on to another idea. I used a reflection view finder to try focus on the reflection but have an unfocused background, i couldn't really get the right angles. So then i moved onto the idea of taking a photograph of something but having another object in front of the lens almost getting in the way but still not being focused. I tried doing this through a window by sticking things to the window and taking a photo. Then i went outside and took photos of the tree whilst holding some wire in front of the camera, i also did the same on the ping pong table, getting the texture of the raindrops and the edges of the table itself.
I uploaded all of the 87 images and the chose just the best ten to edit in photoshop, I just changed the size of the images and some of them came out more green then black and white so i changed that too.
